Ray Mitchell’s How the Gita Changed My American Life follows Ray Mitchell, owner of Mitchell Freight Solutions, a thirty-one-truck company on Chicago’s South Side. After twenty-two years of building the business, Ray measures a good day by numbers, especially whether each load reaches its destination before a client has reason to call. When a shipping container is detained in India, customs officials require the company owner to appear in person, sending Ray across the world for a problem no phone call can settle. An unexpected delay leaves him with several unplanned days in Rishikesh, where encounters far removed from his usual schedule begin changing the questions he asks about success. As the customs issue continues, the Bhagavad Gita reaches his hands, placing an ancient spiritual text beside the American life waiting for him in Chicago.

Ray Mitchell’s How the Gita Changed My American Life is fantastic, and the author has a brilliant ability to make the Bhagavad Gita feel natural inside Ray’s Chicago world. I love how the author translates its teachings through the freight language that shaped Ray’s thinking, giving spiritual ideas an everyday voice that suits the character perfectly. The author is just as good at fleshing out the people around Ray. Zoe is a great example, narrating her own life aloud before recruiting Ray as campaign manager for her Recess Council run. Sarah has the same individuality when she covers the dining room table with printed emails highlighted in three colors whenever she needs to sort through a difficult office situation. Well-written and accessible, readers who enjoy contemporary spiritual fiction will adore this book.
