Hunter’s Moon by Sarah M. Awa opens with Mel realizing she had dropped her mobile phone. Along with Pam and Timmy, she retraces her steps, finally retrieving the device from a cave that shelters a terrifying beast. Only the tip of Mel’s finger is bitten, but that is enough to trigger her transformation into a werewolf. Fortunately, she is contacted by Gavin who moves her to a safe place where she can change without attacking her friends. All is not well as her friends are distraught and suspicious regarding her monthly disappearances. A mysterious organization of werewolves is also tracking Mel. Gavin doesn’t want anything to do with the support organization, but Mel joins in the hope that they are developing a cure. Will she learn to control the madness, and survive the growing anti-werewolf hysteria developing in the community?

Hunter’s Moon by Sarah M. Awa was a convincing shifter fantasy with effective characterization. I liked the realism established as the author explored the specific symptoms and implications of Mel’s metamorphosis into a wolf. Mel’s struggle to maintain her friendships and grade point average was most authentic. I responded with respect as the infected humans took precautions to protect others from their monthly bouts of savagery. The ethics of the hybrid characters awakened my sympathy and concern. The support organization aroused a mixture of hope and suspicion, along with suspense as I wondered when the truth would be revealed. This story established a setting and characters that I would like to spend more time reading about.
