Hype is a work of fiction in the interpersonal drama subgenre penned by author Yvette M Calleiro. It is aimed at young adult readers, but it does also contains scenes of sexual violence. The book follows high school student Cici as she gets ready for the best year of her life; co-captain of the cheerleaders, a boyfriend who inspires envy from all, and her mom moving in with her wealthy fiancé. Initially nervous about the school outcast becoming her stepsister, when Cici becomes the victim of violence and struggles to find support, it is this new relationship that offers a much-needed lifeline.
This is a book that carries a lot of emotional weight and discusses in detail the emotional and mental health consequences of sexual violence. The subject matter is handled with the utmost respect by the author, and my sincere investment in Cici’s journey was never undermined by elements included for shock value. Yvette M Calleiro is a gifted author whose excellent descriptive prose paints an envious portrait of Cici’s life at the start of the book, creating a high school experience that will be familiar to many.
The first half of this story is pitched perfectly as a teen movie with the cliques and the larger-than-life characters within them, which serves to add significant impact to the story when Cici is raped. The perfect world she occupies is shattered, and we feel the shattering in our hearts because of the tonal shift that Hype accomplishes to emphasize its message. The story that follows is a powerful exploration of the world of a sexual violence victim who feels that justice may never be achievable. I recommend this book to any reader interested in an honest and heartfelt reflection of the issue.
