Drama is just an expression of negativity, according to Aeliana, a special individual with the responsibility of guarding and awakening positivity in the world. I Awaken by Renée Wehrle relates Aeliana’s quest to brighten the outlook of her new hometown, Blame, Utah. As one of the remaining Ancients, along with her grandmother and mother, Aeliana must seek out truly negative forces and try to reestablish the balance on the side of good in this realm. Aligning with her new friend’s Uncle Denali, a spiritual leader of his people, and an old friend of his, Aeliana focuses on her powers to try to control a threat to the welfare of the town.
In a practical way, Aeliana, Thea and Bryant approach the school about starting a new club to help students lead more positive lives with inspiration and the opportunity to help those less fortunate. Of course, the ‘in group’ tries to make things difficult for the new student, but Aeliana knows her strength and purpose and does not let anyone get in her way while remaining positive and not stooping to tricks or threats. Will she have awakened her abilities enough when the showdown comes or will darkness continue to spread over the small town and its inhabitants?
Nicely done with a great message and supportive characters. Interesting concepts about the nature of positive and negative thought as well as a brief look at Native American beliefs form the basis of this engaging and thought-provoking novel by Renée Wehrle. I Awaken could be about anyone who realizes that there is more to the universe than just our individual selves with personal desires and selfish lifestyles. Solid characters who reflect the typical teenage issues and a strong dose of love of family provide a realistic background for the fanciful action that keeps you wondering how it will all work out. Well written and well worth reading for young adults or anyone interested in seeing what a positive approach to life can do.
