I love blueberries, don’t you? They’re so sweet, sometimes with a little nip to the juice, and they just seem to melt in the mouth, leaving a blue-stained tongue to prove their merit. In Shannon Anderson’s I LOVE Blueberries, young Jolie expresses her love of blueberries and she’s encouraged and challenged to grow her own blueberry bushes – not outside, but inside, in pots, hydroponically. It’s a big task and a little expensive to start, but she finds a way to make it a success and keeps a fascinating scrapbook-like journal documenting each step of the process.
Shannon Anderson’s picture book, I LOVE Blueberries, is a clever way to teach young readers about blueberries. This nutritional and delicious fruit is good to eat and easy to grow. It is told in simple language so young readers can easily follow along. Accompanied by pages from Jolie’s scrapbook journal, the plot not only entertains but educates young readers on the value of growing one’s own food. The illustrations by Jaclyn Sinquett are bright, bold, and colorful and add a fascinating dimension to the story. At the end of the book, there’s a nutritional guide to blueberries and healthy eating, more information on hydroponic gardening, and other interesting tidbits about blueberries. It’s certainly a great way to encourage young readers to consider growing some of their own food or visiting a farm to harvest it themselves. The story also promotes collaborative thinking and working together to bring an idea to fruition. This is a fascinating read for any age.
