I Can’t Do This! I Can by Marian M.H. Rutt is one of the most powerful and deeply moving memoirs I have read. Marian and her husband Phil were living a wonderful, successful life. When Marian became pregnant, they were delighted and prepared for the arrival of the new addition to their family. At twenty-eight weeks of her pregnancy, everything went wrong. She was admitted to the hospital with incredibly high blood pressure and a placental abruption. An emergency C-Section meant the birth of a premature and very sick baby, Philip. Weeks of ventilators, incubators, and constant monitoring would see the tiny, little infant survive, but for Philip’s parents, his diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy and other neurological conditions meant a lifetime of constant around-the-clock care. Despite the trauma of Philip’s birth, Marian and her husband decided to have another child. Fortunately, Peter was born healthy and quickly became a guardian and protector of his older, disabled brother. Marian and Phil decided to adopt an orphan from Vietnam, and ten-year-old Liz joined this extraordinary family. This memoir portrays the trials, tribulations, heartache, and immense pleasure they gained from having Philip in their lives, enriching it with his smiles, laughter, and constant love.

I Can’t Do This! I Can will have you reaching for the tissues, but not for the reasons you might think. Marian M.H. Rutt describes in raw terms the emotions she experienced once she realized the extent of Philip’s conditions and future limitations. What really shines through this amazing story is the power of a mother’s love, her total commitment to ensuring the best outcomes for Philip’s treatment and future development. The steadfastness, commitment, and unwavering faith of her husband Phil were inspirational for me. She had to make the hard decisions regarding treatment and care for Philip, and she went about it with the same planning and commitment she applied to her family life and her career. The adoption of Liz, the young Vietnamese orphan, gives the memoir an extra dimension. The family photos give readers context and help them realize this is a family’s real life. My kudos to this entire family and my heartfelt thanks for allowing me into a tiny part of your amazing journey. I highly recommend this read.

In her memoir, I Can't Do This! I Can, Marian Rutt’s life changes when her son Philip is born months early and leaves the hospital with conditions that require constant medical care. She takes full responsibility for directing his treatment, creating exact systems for feeding, monitoring seizures, and organizing therapy while continuing to earn as the medical costs rise. When those costs exceed what her work can cover, she files a legal claim tied to the circumstances of his birth and gets funding that supports his long-term care. She studies for a real estate license at night after full days of caregiving, then enters the field and completes property sales while maintaining his daily care. A heart attack derails all she's built, and she must fight for a return to life through physical recovery and ongoing demand.

Marian M.H. Rutt’s I Can't Do This! I Can is the real picture of a woman cracking on when everything gets heavy, and showing up, day after day, when absolutely nothing lines up. I love the descriptions of growing up in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where church and community activities were part of routine life, including participation in Mennonite Central Committee projects. It's so fascinating. When it comes to detailing managing life, raising a son with exceptional needs, this is when we truly see that Rutt herself is exceptional. She doesn’t sit back and hope things improve. She tracks Philip’s intake, logs medical changes, and steps in when care staff miss the mark. At the same time, she’s studying real estate at night, then turning that into completed deals in a short window. For readers dealing with huge family responsibilities, healthcare systems, or the reality of carrying out more than one role at once, Rutt's inspirational memoir is going to speak to you. Very highly recommended.

I Can’t Do This! I Can by Marian M. H. Rutt is a memoir based on the author’s experiences as a mother facing a life-changing situation. Her son, Philip, is born extremely premature after Marian suddenly develops preeclampsia, and she has to have an emergency C-section at just twenty-eight weeks. Philip weighs less than three pounds and doesn’t show signs of life at first. What follows is a long stretch of hospital stays, medical setbacks, and constant anxiety about his future. As Philip’s diagnoses—cerebral palsy and blindness—come in, Marian and her husband, Phil, have to figure out how to stay hopeful while learning therapy routines and advocacy skills. Beyond the NICU, they expand their family with another child and an adopted daughter, all while Marian tries to keep her identity alive. Can she and her family move forward when everything around them is changing?

I Can’t Do This! I Can by Marian M. H. Rutt is one of the most moving and inspiring memoirs about family love that you’ll ever read. What really touched my heart is how candidly the events are depicted. Marian doesn’t hide the exhaustion, fear, or constant juggling between hospital visits, therapy sessions, seizures, and work. She reveals how seemingly trivial things, like a meal from a neighbor, advice from a program, or a kind word, can mean a lot to someone going through these life changes. She also mentions how these experiences have affected her other kids, as they learned patience and empathy along the way. Faith is always there, helping her see challenges as part of something much bigger. There’s honesty about things like marital strain, career changes, and incredible moments such as Philip's first smile or milestone achievements that feel huge. This is a book for anyone facing unexpected challenges or readers who want to see how courage and God can carry a family through the impossible.

I Can't Do This! I Can by Marian M. H. Rutt tells readers what happens when her son, Philip, is born at just 28 weeks, after she develops severe preeclampsia. He’s tiny, fragile, and every day is a fight to keep him alive. Marian and her husband are in the hospital pretty much all the time, dealing with emergencies, talking to doctors, and making decisions no parent should ever have to make. The book goes through all the routines and treatments they have to do, while they try their best to care for a child with cortical blindness and cerebral palsy. Meanwhile, their family continues to grow—a second son is born, and they adopt a daughter from Vietnam. Marian also works to keep her career and her sense of self while holding everything together. It's a journey of endurance, learning to adapt as a family, and finding the strength they didn't know they had before.

I Can't Do This! I Can by Marian M. H. Rutt isn’t merely about hospitals, medical problems, and grueling routines. It's a heartfelt memoir about how a whole family changes and grows when faced with challenges no one expects. Marian reveals how her other children adjusted to a life where caregiving takes up a lot of space. She explains all the therapy routines, education plans, and programs in a practical way that makes everything easy to process. Her work in real estate is another layer of her journey, demonstrating how she keeps her own life and independence going while attending to her home life. Adopting a child from another country brings fresh cultural experiences and new changes to their family life, while creating joy and growth for them all. The latter parts of the book look at long-term planning, adult care, and navigating the healthcare system. Through it all, faith and community are what keep them going. Very highly recommended.

In I Can't Do This! I Can by Marian M. H. Rutt tells her story. Her parents were hardworking and fostered the same work ethic and moral values that would be instrumental to Marian as she embarked on her adult life. Marian and Phil dated for many years before getting married as they worked on their careers. After some years of marriage, during a vacation in Ocean City, New Jersey, Marian discovers she is pregnant, which is great news for the couple. As things unfold, Marian develops preeclampsia, which makes her very sick and takes a huge toll on the couple. The baby has to be delivered prematurely and suffers a grade IV intracranial hemorrhage. Later on, they discover baby Philip has cerebral palsy and cortical blindness. This means he would need a lot of care for his whole life. How do Phil and Marian navigate the challenges of raising baby Philip as their family grows, and also work on their career issues?

I Can't Do This! I Can by Marian M. H. Rutt is not just a story of courage and hope but also resilience. It is a good example of how people can handle various challenges in life. I also believe such literature can help motivate readers and remove various stigmas facing people with disabilities. As a medic, it helped me to reflect on the emotional impact of what patients go through as they face their conditions. The reader will also appreciate the importance of having a strong social circle when facing life challenges, as we see in the case of Marian, her husband, and their friends. The narration was excellent, and Marian also ensured that all events and emotions were vividly captured, which helped to capture the imagination of the reader. This was a good read, and I look forward to reading something else by Marian M. H. Rutt.
