Illusions of Paradise by Pat McKanic is a murder mystery with plenty of sass. Toni Jackson is a newspaper reporter working on the beautiful island of San SayPaz, an island of white beaches, blue seas and palm trees. Everything is going swimmingly for Toni, especially her relationship with Detective Tolliver, but things are about to go wrong. A woman is murdered, and all the clues point to Tolliver’s boss having something to do with it. The evidence in the case has gone walkabout and the crime lord who was charged has now been released – who is covering up and what? Toni steps up to unearth the truth, but when her news sources start dying she leaves San SayPaz. However, although she runs, she can’t hide, and someone is coming for her. Nobody is who they seemed to be, and Toni has got to find out the truth before it is too late.
Illusions of Paradise by Pat McKanic is a remarkable story in a wonderful setting. The story jumps straight in with both feet and it was one of the hardest books I have had to read – I couldn’t work out who the murderer was until Ms. McKanic chose to reveal it! Romance mixed with suspense and murder makes the perfect backdrop for this story and the descriptive nature transports you straight to the island. The characters are exceptionally well developed, leaving you with no illusions about who they are and what makes them tick. They are easy characters to identify with and they fit the story perfectly, a story that has a winding, twisting plot with lots of surprises along the way. I really enjoyed this book and I hope there is going to be another one.
