In a Flash, a contemporary romance novel by Jan Tilley, hits every aspect of a true romance story. It is not just about the love between a man and a woman. It is not a story of flowers and Valentine sweetness. Rachel and Brad have been married for twenty-three years when he announces that he wants a divorce. After admitting that he only remained in the marriage until their daughter was off to college, Rachel is at a loss. Her life was centered on her daughter; the daughter that Brad never wanted. And now he no longer wanted Rachel. No longer needed or wanted, Rachel strikes out on her own. All she has left in her life is Jasper, an elderly man in the nursing home where she works, and Sadie, the inspirational owner of the area diner. What Rachel realizes is that these two individuals more than fill the gaping hole of loneliness that her broken marriage has created.
Jan Tilley has intricately woven a romance rich in self-exploration. Rachel is forced to reach deep within herself to find the woman she never knew existed. Sadie sees Rachel’s worth and helps her gain attention as a professional photographer. Jasper encourages her to reach beyond her own expectations. Maggie supports her with a force that equals Rachel’s motherly devotion. When she is reacquainted with her high school friend Charlie, Rachel begins to feel she has a purpose. And, lastly, Rachel begins to see that her life has not been wasted, but is only just beginning.
