In Death's Company by Natalie Johanson sees a wave of unexplained deaths drawing the attention of May Haines, a forensic investigator and witch with limited magical skill, except for her unusual control over fire. As she examines the growing number of victims, she uncovers signs pointing to a deeper mystery involving vanished souls. Meanwhile, Death begins to notice that her own enforcers, the Grim Reapers, have gone missing without explanation. Realizing the disturbances may be connected, May joins forces with a local homicide detective and Death herself to investigate. As the search intensifies, May uncovers evidence of a hidden threat with the power to disrupt the balance between worlds, forcing her to confront truths about magic, mortality, and her role in both. “So... I sort of thought Lady Death would come since this is like… kind of important information.”
In Death’s Company: Scythes and Souls by Natalie Johanson is a brilliantly sharp, sarcastic, and utterly hilarious exploration of a world where Death is less a concept and more a grim, charming employer. The writing crackles with wit, making even the darkest moments feel oddly delightful. Johanson doesn’t explain her world so much as fling you into it—Reapers, blood magic, Fates, and all—and dares you to keep up. It works spectacularly. May’s encounters with ghosts, strange glows, and stolen souls unfold with impeccable timing, inviting just enough suspicion and curiosity to keep the pages flying. The way the supernatural blends with May’s very human trauma—from her heart transplant to her defiance of being treated like she’s breakable—is both acerbic and striking. Every sarcastic line, ghostly surprise, and unspoken rule contributes to a story that is, frankly, absolutely brilliant from start to finish. Very highly recommended.
