The Rojak Pot of Sorts With a Jaffna Tamilian Twist is a collection of 18 short stories by Nirmala Kasinathan. A university student gets a bout of chickenpox, and in her delirious state, she explores the tenets of Hindu philosophy and cosmology. A foreign student exchange program unexpectedly reunites a family torn apart by a tragic plane crash twelve years ago. Deeply in love, a woman makes grand plans with her family for her upcoming wedding when, out of the blue, her fiancé stops answering her phone calls, leaving her in despair. An astrologer warns a blissfully married couple that their firstborn child's planetary alignments will cause upheaval in their lives. A young couple takes their two dogs on a picnic, and while they are enjoying their romantic getaway, the dogs sabotage a dognapper's plan.

This is a wonderful collection of tales. Inspired by her Jaffna Tamil and Malaysian heritage, author Nirmala Kasinathan presents captivating slice-of-life stories that evoke a wide range of emotions. I liked how almost every story has a surprise in store for the reader. The characters are realistic and often find themselves in unexpected situations that they have to navigate, just like in real life. The Rojak Pot of Sorts With a Jaffna Tamilian Twist is the kind of collection you want with you when you travel or for a cozy read at home. It immediately puts you in a relaxed mood. Almost all the stories have a hopeful ending. For me, the highlight of Nirmala's writing was how much she packs into each of these narratives in a relatively short span. I loved the book and will definitely recommend it.
