It is 1941. A group of British officers of various ranks is being held in Stalag XXA, Poland, as POWs by the Germans. After a British colonel asks his juniors to gather intelligence, one officer overhears a conversation involving the camp commandant about a shipment designated for Himmler. Determined to learn more, the colonel orders a break-in at the commandant’s house. Lance Corporal Richard “Jock” Mitchell pairs up with Private Hyde, a notorious thief, for the task. The pair discovers from a telegram in the commandant’s house that the shipment is gold. As the group mulls over this information, a surprise transfer occurs that sees senior officers separated from the juniors. Jock, now the highest-ranking British prisoner at the camp, comes up with a plan to steal the gold, bringing together a team that includes Hyde and a few Polish POWs. For their plan to succeed, they have to sneak in and out of the camp undetected. Can they pull this off? Read In the Face of the Foe: The Jock Mitchell Adventures Book 3 by Nathaniel Wrey.

Gritty conversations with banter and wit unfold in this intriguing, fast-paced plot, which features a fascinating cast. The cinematic depictions of the scenes transported me back to the World War II era, offering a glimpse into Eastern and Central Europe during and after the war. It felt like I was next to the cast, experiencing the deplorable conditions, fear, despair, and tension in the prison camp, as well as their exploits outside the camp. I also learned how different events of the war affected both sides of the front line, including the lives of the immediate communities and the POWs. Jock highlights how the complexities of war, such as the struggle for survival and moral dilemmas, impact the human psyche, giving insight into how PTSD and other war-related psychological issues arise. If you are looking for a military historical novel flavored with high-stakes action, adventure, and suspense, In the Face of the Foe by Nathaniel Wrey is a must-read.
