Into Darkness by Hayley Barrett is a young adult sci fi novel set in the post-apocalyptic city of New Phoenix. Alexandra is the fifteen-year-old slightly spoiled daughter of the most influential man in town, a wealthy judge. But that can't stop her from being found guilty of a crime that she didn't commit, and sentenced to spend her time in Elder Grey, her society's worst prison. Although her punishment is horrible, she is able to find some silver lining in her experience. She makes a new and unexpected friend, finds something a little more in one of her guards, and discovers secrets of her past. To survive, she must battle the elements, her enemies, and the drifters, humans who have extraordinary powers but also thirst for human blood. Can Alexandra become the first person to survive the dangerous three-week trek through the New Zealand bush? Or will her punishment get the better of her?
This is a cool book set in the dystopian society of New Zealand, a landscape that many American readers will find intriguing and unique. This story also has the elements of a typical sci fi and dystopian story: where freedom of speech against a corrupt government means risking your life because the government controls every aspect of its citizens' lives. This story was well-developed and moved along at a nice pace that will keep readers engaged and interested. Great setting, great premise, nice execution! Great job!
