Like most kindergarteners, Mia likes routines. Everything in her life has always been simple and easy, with no changes from activities with her family to what she eats. In I Don’t Think So! by Kelli Joyner, Mia is challenged to change her perspective one day when everything shifts on her first day of school. She discovered that with each challenge, she had to work diligently to maintain her boundaries and develop the ability to have a voice in the various situations and circumstances that she encountered throughout the day. Each time Cody asked her to participate in an activity at school, she would state her mantra, 'I Don’t Think So!' because it challenged her to get out of her comfort zone. Eventually, with the help of her new friend, Cody, she was able to see things differently, from playtime and reading to her friendship.

I Don’t Think So! by Kelli Joyner is ideal for middle school children constantly trying to discover their identities. As they navigate through their lives, they experience various emotions, which helps to shape who they will become. In finding their voices and discovering their own styles, even in their attire, the reader will discover that they are not alone, just like Mia. As she eventually becomes more accepting, she realizes that change isn’t bad after all, even though it can initially be scary. Parents will feel a sense of relief as they see their children navigate life and become more excited to experience more of what life has to offer. This book is a great tool to help children work through their feelings and become open to different perspectives for growth.
