In Alida Miranda-Wolff’s Into the Flood, revolutionary general Lyanna Tempestas and her husband, Cassius Corvus, sail to Weatherly after a brutal campaign against Tellus. Lyanna carries the Storm God’s magic, while Cassius is soulbound to her and vulnerable to the Sun God inside him. Their army needs stronger magic to survive the next stage of the war, and Weatherly is the one place where the Raven may grant new pacts. The islands are also Cassius’s homeland, where his return forces him to face the people who still expect revenge for an old massacre. Inside their own ranks, distrust of Lyanna’s power begins to harden into open resistance. When the gods warn that victory depends on a new conquest, Lyanna and Cassius must secure Weatherly’s support before the revolution tears apart the world they hope to save.
Alida Miranda-Wolff’s Into the Flood is ferocious fantasy fiction, and the author gives every victory a price that stays with the people who survive it. The best part is Lyanna. Her power is spectacular, but the way she keeps count of the soldiers she cannot save makes every battle feel painfully personal. I also love Nemesis, the diviner whose strange glimpses of possible futures give her chapters an eerie beauty, especially as her wish to return home becomes stronger. The Stormlands mourning ritual is beautifully imagined. Cassius builds separate fires for the places he and Lyanna have lost, then they cover themselves in ash before speaking their grief into the earth. Well written and haunting, readers who enjoy dark fantasy with dangerous magic will adore this.
