In Jeunanne Alkins' informative children's picture book, Island Babies Ready. Set. . . Hatch!, Mummy is a leatherback turtle who swims thousands of miles across the ocean to find the perfect place to lay her eggs. Crawling up the warm sands of a Caribbean island, she is careful to bury the eggs in a safe place, and then to cover them so that the baby turtles inside the eggs can grow, break out of their shells, and find their way to the sea. But when the nearby river rises too high, the babies are in danger and might not be able to escape to higher ground. Will baby Hatch be able to make a plan to lead his brothers and sisters to safety?
Ready. Set. . . Hatch! is beautifully written and illustrated for young readers by the author, the talented Jeunanne Alkins. In the introductory pages before the story begins, she shares some information about endangered leatherbacks, including that it's estimated only one in one thousand leatherback turtles survive to adulthood. Fortunately, the story won't scare young readers with the real life predator threats the tiny turtles encounter, with the story instead focusing on leadership and team work to overcome a problem. The illustrations are stunning and creative, with Alkins using a combination of images and words to depict the story's action. Small children will enjoy having this read to them and older ones will enjoy searching the pages on their own to put the story together.
