Packets of Hope: A Wish for Every Child by Jill Siegal Chalsty follows the author as she moves from a long, healing sea voyage straight into a driving trip through six European nations. Dealing with her own cancer recovery and mourning her late husband, she decides to drive all the way from Belfast to Berlin to deliver her non-profit’s free life skills materials directly to education officials. She navigates the logistics of visiting different government ministries and communities while traveling with two different couples at different points along the trek. Her route takes her right through areas with deep histories of trauma, like Belfast’s peace walls and Holocaust deportation sites in Germany, as she works past bureaucratic red tape to hand out thirty-four informational packets. The painful history Chalsty encounters constantly merges with her own experience of grief, turning the travel into a lesson in accountability as much as international advocacy. Her memoir connects everything beautifully, showing how overcoming hardship can actually inspire a direct effort to help kids navigate the modern world.

Packets of Hope: A Wish for Every Child by Jill Siegal Chalsty is a truly moving memoir written in a remarkably human, inspiring voice. Chalsty is very candid about the interpersonal conflicts she experienced with her travel companions, which makes her experiences feel genuine and real. Her writing moves easily from formal meetings in major capitals to intimate, reflective moments at regional memorials. The chapters map out the road trip so smoothly that you feel like an actual passenger counting down the miles across each territory. Chalsty’s observations on regional school issues provide a realistic view of how tough it is to influence top government agencies. It is very humanizing to see an advocate openly own up to her own communication slip-ups instead of trying to paint the trip as flawless. I highly recommend getting this memoir if you want a true look at how someone can channel their loss into a practical, successful global mission.
