Michael’s father has recently passed away, and his brother Roy delivers one final request from their dad: an old shoebox full of family memories. Nothing in the shoebox appeals to Michael except an old dictaphone and some tapes. There’s nothing remarkable on the tapes, but they inspire Michael to do the same and record some memories of his own. His reminiscences are all about past loves, mostly from his high school and college years, and none of the stories are pleasant. Between the recordings, something is going on in Michael’s life: he’s selling or giving away his possessions, and in some of his speeches he can be heard coughing. Novellas make for ideal reading as they can be devoured in one sitting. At less than 100 pages, that’s highly possible with James Kinsley’s book, and most readers will find they can’t stop until they know what's going on. Like all good novellas, there’s always a twist in the end, and I doubt even the most avid reader will spot this one coming. Michael isn’t much of a likable character; his past relationships are evidence of that, and it doesn’t appear that he’s amounted to much throughout his life. This all helps prepare the reader for what they think is going on. It’s Hard to Tell You This is short-form literary fiction and will appeal to anyone who’s ever reflected on their life and wondered what if?
