All babies like to snuggle close when darkness approaches. For many animals, it’s bedtime, a time to go to sleep. Puppies and kittens snuggle close to their mothers, as do baby bears and lion cubs. It’s also time for human babies to sleep, too, all snuggled in their beds, “Feeling loved, warm and tight.” As the stars light up the darkened sky, they’re telling all of us that “It’s time to say good night.”

That’s the title of Dr. S. Amna Husain’s charming picture book story, It’s Time to Say Good Night. Told in rhyming verse, and using simple language so young readers can follow along, the plot progresses through several examples of animals and their babies. The story might be encouraging active young readers to settle down for the night, but it’s also teaching them something about animals and their babies, sometimes in the text, but also in the illustrations. For example, the baby bear is illustrated snuggling up to its parent, in this case, Papa, in a cozy cave. And the lion cub lives in a hot, arid desert-like space, “the savannah lands,” where the cub “curls up/ With his mother on the sands.” The author wraps up the examples with the human baby sound asleep, warm and secure in its crib, where “They rest a deep sleep/ Until the morning light.” The story is told with love and compassion. With the rhythmic lyricism of the rhyming verse, the story will surely lull young readers to sleep. Absolutely beautiful. Loved it!
