Jake The Firedrake by Chandele Morris is a cute rhyming picture book about emotional intelligence and teaching kids how to understand and navigate their emotions. Jake is nuts about dragons, and he wears his new dragon t-shirt to school. But something happens that makes Jake the focus of teasing, and his day only gets worse from there, as frustration and sadness take over. Then comes the anger – the boiling, fire-breathing anger that turns him into a firedrake! Nothing could calm him down until his favorite teacher came in and taught him how to use his breath to cool off. From that day on, the firedrake didn’t appear again, because Jake had learned how to control his emotions.
Jake The Firedrake by Chandele Morris is a must-read for all kids. It is packed with cool illustrations by Kei Sato and is full of advice about handling emotions. It’s a fun story that will make readers laugh as they read – it could even be acted out to help them better understand their emotions and the effect they have. It’s not just about emotions, though. It’s about the value of friendship, and how showing kindness can help even the angriest or saddest of people. It’s a great way for kids to see how emotions like anger can start and what happens when they are left unchecked. It will also help parents and teachers teach the kids in their care how to understand and manage their emotions in the right way. This is one book every home and school should have on hand, as it teaches important lessons in the most fun way possible – the best way to learn.
