A long time ago giraffes had short necks and they looked very different. They could not reach very high because their necks were short. These short-necked giraffes roamed the African plains and there was one giraffe, Jane, who was different from the rest. She was clumsy and all the other giraffes made fun of her. Jane wished to be like them and have their beauty and grace. Giraffes ate the leaves on tall trees and with their short necks, they had to jump and hop. Jane could never eat from those trees because she was a clumsy jumper.
One day Jane was hungry and she jumped as high as she could, and her head got stuck between the branches. She tugged and pulled harder and she stretched so much that her neck became sore. When she was free, she realized her neck was three times longer. Though all the other giraffes laughed at her, Jane could now easily reach the treetops...
Jane the Clumsy Giraffe by Karen Mowrer is an adorable story that conveys a good message to young readers in an entertaining way. The illustrations are wonderful and they add color and fun to the story. Jane the giraffe is cute and children will love the way the author has portrayed her. The rhyming verses give the story a good pace and movement. The book can be used for read-aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries and also for storytelling sessions because of its encouraging and motivational message - Jane changed the world just by being herself!
