Jubilee and the Stinky Fish by Alice V. Walters is an exemplary middle-grade story that masterfully explores many children's issues. When Jubilee’s family experiences a devastating tragedy, they are forced to make changes and leave their neighborhood. As Jubilee prepares to join Washington Middle School, he feels like a fish out of water. In his new school, he encounters other children who face other issues. The story follows the children’s lives, threading important themes and lessons about facing consequences, forgiveness, sharing, friendship, diversity, and community into each subplot. Their stories inspire other children to discover their talents, not to give up, and to seek help from trusted persons. It encourages them to explore their interests and offers insight into the social and emotional challenges that many children deal with.

The stories tactfully cover many important topics relatable to middle school children. I liked that the characters are diverse and dynamic. I loved watching each grow with the help of their teachers and parents. Their stories instill many important values in children that will serve them beyond their school years. I appreciated that questions were included at the end of each chapter. They offered time for reflection on the examined themes and suggested ways that the lessons could be applied. There are many light-hearted moments in the stories that I enjoyed. Jubilee and the Stinky Fish by Alice V. Walters is a must-read children’s book for parents and young readers. It examines real-life issues that children face through the lives of various multi-layered, well-developed characters. Highly recommended.
