Just After Midnight by David Cameron is a young adult adventure story with a difference. Dominic has always seen shadowy figures but he never realized he was the only one. Now he thinks this is why he was sent to a distant school hidden on the moors, a school shrouded in mystery. Stanmoor House School is not what Dominic expected a school to be and it hides a chilling secret. The children are picked to go there and some are more special than others. What is Stanmoor House School hiding? What lies beneath it? And why is there an early warning military system there? Dominic can’t turn to the teachers for help when he and his friends get into trouble so who can they turn to? The moors are ancient and their history may hold clues to the answer.
Just After Midnight by David Cameron is set on the North Yorkshire Moors in 1970, an eerie place to be at the best of times. This story will draw you in from the first page, setting the scene for the rest. The characters are well-developed, real people you can relate to, and are likable, especially the main protagonist. It’s a YA mystery combined with horror and a bit of humor to lighten it up, not a story to be taken too seriously – although if you know the Yorkshire Moors well, you might start to wonder about what, if anything, is hidden beneath them! This story has plenty of action, and it twists and turns, building the suspense as you read. It will keep you guessing all the way through and the ending kind of hints that the story may not be done. Whether there is another or not, this is an excellent, engaging story that will keep you entertained for several hours.
