“Everyone knew what they were. Humanoid in shape, monstrous in behavior. Creatures with no soul, no conscience, no desire beyond destruction.” The menace is clear in KOA: Dark Systems by Chris Bankus, a sci-fi tale set in the cold of space sometime in the future. Ravagers by name, this enemy would be unstoppable if not for a few gifted young humans akin to comic-book superheroes. When one of these Ravager fleets shows unusual behavior near a long-dead star system, a surveillance vessel is dispatched to investigate. Aboard the vessel, two very special operatives are present: 14-year-old Sky (a master of electricity) and her friend Julian, a gifted young man with psionic abilities. But the mission quickly goes awry, and the young would-be saviors discover a new enemy, one that makes the Ravagers look like a joke.
Science fiction with strong Christian themes defines KOA: Dark Systems by Chris Bankus, and it reminded me of my own teen years reading action-packed tales like The Legion of Superheroes. The plot focuses on a select group of special young humans who set out to investigate an enemy, only to find themselves in an epic struggle of survival with the odds stacked against them. Themes of friendship, sacrifice, faith, and the age-old struggle of good versus evil form the backbone of the story. Character development is split, focusing just as much on the special abilities of the young cast as on their sometimes quirky personalities. Action-packed and fast-paced, this book is specifically geared toward young teens of faith interested in sci-fi stories and a good reminder that “we don’t get to pick the darkness...but we get to choose how we shine.”
