Jonathan Sears’s Legend of the Last Star Knight begins in Winnipeg with Alex, a shy high school senior who simply wants to slide under the radar and maybe talk to his crush, Ally. Instead, an ancient artifact and a bizarre cosmic storm rip him away from everything he knows, dropping him right into a hostile futuristic galaxy. Suddenly, he is trapped in a huge galactic empire where humans are an enslaved, inferior species on the brink of total erasure. To stay alive, Alex has to team up with a diverse crew of space travelers, a legendary human rebel named Kirk Anderson, and Maggie, a tough girl who really knows how to handle a weapon. Together, they must beat cryptic challenges across alien planets to find hidden artifacts called Power Stars before their rivals beat them to it. All the while, they must constantly dodge ruthless alien hunters. Can this shy teen boy survive the colossal target on his back and protect his new friends?

Legend of the Last Star Knight by Jonathan Sears is a young adult sci-fi tale that breathes vibrant new life into the idea of a hidden destiny awaiting a seemingly ordinary teen boy. The world-building in this book is second to none. I liked that the distinct extraterrestrial factions created a very immersive setting for Alex’s personal quest for true belonging. What resonated with me deeply was the sincerity of Sear’s narrative voice, which carefully captured Alex’s shock as he faced a vast, unforgiving cosmos. I was impressed by how well the storyline skillfully moved from tense standoffs to exciting stellar escapes while still centering on the core group dynamics between Alex and his friends. Their captivating journey helped create authentic, well-orchestrated bonds among them all. Overall, watching a reserved, shy teenager slowly learn to trust his own instincts in a hostile universe was the ultimate highlight. Anyone looking for an adventurous space odyssey will love this book.
