If you are either religious or spiritual, you may have heard the word ‘Lent’ and may have practiced it at some point in your life within your church. Lent is a sacrificial practice of abstaining from food or certain foods over a forty-day period which usually ends around Easter Sunday. The purpose of Lent is for self-denial in order to gain more intimacy with God or a higher power. In Lent And Fasting The Foundation of Good Health Recipe Book: The Cleansing Of Body And Soul by Demetra S. Gerontakis, you gain a better understanding of the benefits of fasting while getting some great meal ideas. These are meals that you can prepare during your time of sacrifice and intimacy while helping to cleanse your body and soul. During the time of Lent, you are not only abstaining from food, but praying to gain wisdom pertaining to your prayers. The less food that is in your system during this time, the more enlightened you will feel and you will have the ability to reflect more inwardly.

I am currently on a forty-day fast with my church until Easter Sunday and have done several types of fasts throughout my life. I am also abstaining from television or anything that would be a hindrance to me in obtaining an understanding of the intimacy with God, or to eating according to the Daniel Fast. In the Lent And Fasting The Foundation of Good Health Recipe Book: The Cleansing Of Body And Soul by Demetra S. Gerontakis, I see a lot of meals that I can prepare using the ingredients that are similar to the Daniel Fast - which consists of fruits, vegetables, juices, water, grains, nuts, seeds, beans and oils. During a fast it is imperative to be careful of what you do and consume during this time of consecration so Demetra is right on track with creating this recipe book for those of us who need it.
