In Pam Sears's Leo’s First Field Trip, a young boy reaches a major childhood milestone. We watch little Leo get on a school bus for his first-ever National Park visit. Joined by his parents, friends, and teacher, Leo tours the wilderness with a diligent park ranger, where he learns about local wildlife, nature conservation, and ancient cliff dwellings. It’s a very heartwarming story about his exciting experience. But when Leo spots a beautiful feather that is highly tempting to keep, will he find a way to honor the environment and still achieve his goal of earning an official badge?

Pam Sears’s Leo’s First Field Trip is an engaging children’s picture book that turns an educational day outdoors into a beautiful celebration of environmental stewardship. The story is especially delightful because Sears seamlessly weaves real-world conservation principles into a fun, relatable school adventure. Amy Klein’s lively artwork adds a lot to the charming park setting. They really capture the bright expressions of the students as they spot unique wildlife like a javelina and a coyote. The dialogue is very easy to follow, ensuring that Ranger Pam’s helpful teaching style and the kids’ genuine curiosity shine through immediately. Leo’s thoughtful choices bring a lot of gentle inspiration to the pages, which balances nicely against the fun teamwork of filling out the Junior Ranger booklets. I truly believe that this book is the perfect choice for young explorers and readers. It will leave them eager to start their own outdoor adventures with their friends. Very highly recommended.
