Peanut Butter and Donner: A Curious Chorus by Erin Rosenblum is a unique, rhyming story about two pets who were rescued by their family. Donner is a blue parakeet who was found in an ice cream shop. Peanut Butter is a little brown rabbit who was abandoned and found shivering and alone at a gas station. Once they’re home safe with their loving family, however, they have different ways of recovering from their ordeal. Donner sings loudly and cheerfully, but Peanut Butter is having a hard time letting go of his fears. Donner’s singing makes him even more nervous. Once Donner understands his friend’s concerns, he switches to singing softly instead, which soothes Peanut Butter. The brown bunny begins to run around and play, entertaining Donner with his games. And they understand that even if someone is different from you, you can be the best of friends.
Peanut Butter and Donner is a must-read for all animal lovers. Author Erin Rosenblum and artist Aubree Rosenblum are a talented mother-daughter team who bring the story to life with simple rhymes and illustrations that capture the spirit and expressions of both creatures perfectly. I loved the fact that Donner and Peanut Butter are based on their own pets. The subtle lesson that making friends means accepting others and yourself is perfect for kids (and grownups) who may feel that they can only be friends with those who are similar. Highly recommended for parents, teachers, and librarians who want a book about friendship for the kids in their care.
