Tricksters, Takers, and Team Players: Teaming Up for the Hunt, written by Alisha Gabriel and beautifully illustrated by Vivien Sárkány, is a wonderful children's book that introduces young readers to the natural world—a world where animals hunt in many different ways, reminding us of their intelligence. These ways include predators that trick other animals into catching their food for them, such as the drongo bird and meerkats; takers, such as orcas, which take fish caught by trawlers; and team players, such as the grouper and the moray eel, which work together to catch their prey. Even humans have birds that help them find honey! This colorful book takes young readers on an adventure around the world, introducing the unique bonds between animals and their place in biology.
The factually correct sketches by Vivien Sárkány in Tricksters, Takers, and Team Players offer a unique visual-to-words transition for young readers moving from picture books to sentences. However, the level of information conveyed is advanced enough for the more developed reader. The information is sufficient for young readers and includes additional sources for further reading. Furthermore, the academic names for each type of animal interaction are provided, along with high-quality illustrations that explain what is happening, even for the youngest readers who follow along with the pictures. This is a great tool for fostering a love of nature and curiosity about animal interactions, and it is sure to keep an inquisitive youngster happy. Alisha Gabriel has given words to Vivien Sárkány's sketches, bringing the animals to life in a breathtaking manner.
