Who said competition must be fair? In Lethal Succession by Ruben Elustondo, John Whitney, CEO of Whitney Corporation, decides to retire when he is diagnosed with cancer and given six months to live. To determine his successor, he sets a challenge for his right-hand man, Mike Lamb, and his three children, Paul, Anna, and James Whitney. Whoever impresses him becomes the next CEO. Right away, Anna teams up with her husband, while James and Mike ally, but Paul employs a cunning approach. He portrays himself as the next CEO to broker a deal with California Holdings, an untested company diversifying into Whitney's area of business. Unfortunately, the deal fails when his supervisor questions why a company would pursue a deal that does not favor it. Desperate, Paul misrepresents the situation to California Holdings to secure their help in outmuscling his competitors, but nothing prepares him for what happens when his strategy is revealed.
Lethal Succession by Ruben Elustondo is an intriguing story with an attention-grabbing premise that makes you wish it never ends. The plot is simple yet engaging, as it did not take me long to pick a side to root for once I started reading. Initially, the plot advanced at the pace of a drama, incorporating a touch of humor, deception, and actions that depict the cutthroat nature of some businesses, before layering on the suspense and plot twists of a crime thriller. I loved the directness of the narrative and how Ruben avoided unnecessary lengthy paragraphs that cause a story to lag while describing scenery and characters. I also liked how the author allowed the reader to use their imagination to interpret the characters. Lethal Succession is narrated in the third person and is just the right length to complete in one sitting. Read Lethal Succession if you enjoy crime, thriller, mystery, and business-themed fiction.
