What happens when a silly pup tries to do yoga? Young readers meet a coonhound named Lexi who likes to run, play, and spend time with her family in Lexi the Coonhound Does Yoga! by Meg Martin. One day, while outside with Zoey, she notices Mom rolling something out. The little dog decides she wants to join in on what’s going on. Mom teaches them that yoga is an exercise of the mind, breath, and body. Then she shows Zoey and Lexi how to do it. The three of them practice poses like the tree and the happy baby. Zoey says yoga is great, and Lexi is barking in agreement when they finish up. There’s also a special message from the coonhound herself, sharing what she discovered about doing yoga. What do you think Lexi learned? And would you try yoga, too?
Lexi the Coonhound Does Yoga! by Meg Martin is a cute story. Lexi is very endearing. I enjoyed watching her and Zoey do yoga with Mom. I could picture children giggling as they copied Lexi’s poses. As a teacher, I’d read it during a unit on pets or exercise. I’d then invite kids to practice the poses together. The students could also share which pose is their favorite and why. The story is easy to read, and I think kids will really love Lexi. The artwork is bright, inviting, and full of fun. Every page clearly shows each yoga pose, captures Lexi’s playful personality, and keeps young readers engaged. The illustration I liked best was the one with Lexi doing downward dog. Families, teachers, and anyone who is looking for stories about dogs, movement, and mindfulness will want to add this one to their shelves. This is a book that would fit nicely in homes, schools, and libraries alike.
