Little Rainbow Feels Her Colors by Victoria Santana follows Little Rainbow, who visits the park with her mother after every rainfall, observing the rainbows that appear in the sky. One afternoon, she notices she does not have visible colors like the other rainbows, which prompts her mother to explain that she must discover her own colors by understanding her feelings. Little Rainbow experiments with painting herself and rolling in flower colors, but these actions do not make her colors appear, so she begins exploring emotions and her imagination to discover them. As she engages with creativity, energy, relaxation, kindness, love, and confidence, each corresponding color manifests on her body. Through observation, practice, and reflection on her feelings, Little Rainbow gradually learns that emotions must be experienced and nurtured for her rainbow to remain bright.
Victoria Santana’s Little Rainbow Feels Her Colors is a delightful story with a good message and a lot of heart. The idea of a rainbow that starts out completely grey is a unique angle that I have not encountered before, making Little Rainbow’s journey especially visual. I particularly loved that, while Little Rainbow herself is colorless, the world around her bursts with brilliance, and this is due to Erin Monahan's illustrations, which breathe life into the story. The artwork is in a contemporary cartoon style and rendered in a bold primary color palette. Little Rainbow's color bands appear one at a time in the same increments that a child might explore their feelings, showing young readers that even if someone feels blank on the surface, beauty and vibrancy are waiting to emerge from within. Very highly recommended.
