Living Green and the Spell by Florian Bushy is an endearing story about the events and spells that caused the trees to stop moving and be in one place. Mrs. Florence, a small flower, and Mr. Florian, a small plant, are back at it again, protecting the newly born planet Earth. Many years ago, the newly created Earth received a visitor from outer space. The visitor called himself “Hater the Emperor,” and he was not pleasant. On his arrival, he declared himself to be the leader and everyone else his servants. The plants did not want to be servants because they had always worked together and were kind to each other. What Hater the Emperor wanted was unacceptable to them. Because the plants have legs, they try to run, but Hater would not let them go. He gave them an ultimatum to choose between humans and himself. Find out what they decided by reading this book.

Trees are always loyal to humans, even when people destroy them by cutting them down or burning them to the ground. Living Green and the Spell revolves around the sacrifices trees make for humans. They provide us with the air we breathe, shade from the sun, give us food, and they protect our water bodies. Unfortunately, humans have not done enough to repay the plants and trees. Florian Bushy has created adorable and brave characters to tell this story. Mr. Florian and Mrs. Florence stand up to Hater the Emperor and do not run away in the face of danger. The illustrations depict them and the rest of the story beautifully. The main lesson to be learned from this book is that we need to do more to protect plants because saving them is also about saving ourselves.
