Long Beach: A Novel of Intrigue and Suspense by Norm Olson is a compelling novel featuring intelligence agencies, drug cartels, political intrigue, espionage, and even kidnapping — a great blend of action and adventure. Meet Marc Ryder, a man who is living his dream working for a shady government agency. He travels around the world, but things change when his wife gets embroiled in an international drug smuggling cartel. Follow this protagonist in a whirlwind of action, navigating a very dangerous world with contacts from Russia, Afghanistan and Mexico. Can he ever get his life back in the midst of the turmoil and can he outwit the most dangerous people out there?
Readers are introduced to awesome characters. My favorites were Marc and a cast of supporting characters like the kidnapper Rosanna Romano, Boris Bergraf, Juanita, Sonja, and many others, each playing a very interesting and vital role in the narrative. In the world created by Norm Olson, nothing is predictable and life hangs by a very thin and fragile thread. The first person narrative voice makes for a gripping read and readers will feel pulled into the world of the protagonist — the narrator — thanks to the clarity of the narrative voice. The author knows the economy of words and uses them in a very creative manner, weaving prose that is as exciting as the action it captures. I enjoyed the dialogues which convey a feeling of real life to the reader. Long Beach: A Novel of Intrigue and Suspense melds humor with suspense to offer readers great entertainment. A fast-paced and compelling story with well-handled conflict and exceptional plot lines.
