Long Term Surrender by Patty Almond is a riveting romantic suspense novel set against the vibrant backdrop of the Caribbean and the shadowy world of organized crime. The story follows Katelyn O’Brien, a dedicated high school teacher, unexpectedly caught in a dangerous game involving a powerful cartel, the Phoenix Mafia. Unknowingly, she becomes a courier for sensitive information concealed in a tiny flash drive, which makes her a target for cartel enforcers and government agencies alike. Meanwhile, Noah Perry, a former Navy SEAL now working as a security operative, comes into the picture. He is following Katelyn to intercept the drive, but suddenly finds himself fighting to protect her and is attracted to her. The narrative weaves through tense covert operations, complex relationships, and the contrasting settings of peaceful island landscapes and criminal underworlds, deftly melding danger and desire.
Patty Almond delivers the kind of romance I want to read. There is intrigue, adventure, and tension mounting through every scene with a clever, detailed exploration of emotions. I enjoyed how the author weaves backstories into the characters' lives, allowing their pasts to influence their current actions and predicaments. Katelyn’s journey is one of awakening—realizing her strength in the surrounding chaos, and questioning her assumptions about love and safety. The relationships are layered with tension: Katelyn’s innocent flirtation contrasts sharply with the manipulative schemes of the cartel operatives and Noah's protective instincts, whose haunted past influences his moral choices. Long Term Surrender features an idyllic setting, and the vivid imagery associated with these locales is compelling. This stunningly imagined and skillfully plotted romance begins a series I do not want to miss.
