Love and Blood is the second installment in the Evening Bower series by Sherry Rentschler, a spellbinding paranormal story with a phenomenal conflict and sophisticated characters. Rhea is the original Scarlet Phoenix and the last of her kind, a creature of the sun who has always believed her destiny was to rule the heavens, once shared with cousins of the phoenix, the legendary dragons. With Amor-el, she has defeated the horde of vampires. Birthing Destin, the child of the promise, is another miracle that raises their hopes. But everything begins to change when the blur roses start dying. War looms ahead as powerful enemies converge against Rhea’s family and they will stop at nothing to destroy the already ailing Rhea, the love of her life, and their son, Destin. Do they have enough strength and resources to fight back?
This is a riveting story with legendary creatures, a prophecy that must be protected, and a family that is on the brink of destruction and facing enemies at the time when they are most vulnerable. Love and Blood is gripping, a well-plotted entry in a fascinating series, fast-paced and filled with many surprises. Sherry Rentschler has unique storytelling skills and her characters are extraordinary. I enjoyed the bond between Rhea and Amor-el and the fact that they believe strongly in the prophecy and that their son could be its fulfillment. The premise is strong and it establishes a foundation for plot points that move this story forward. The only author who has succeeded in keeping me so engrossed with the paranormal is Christopher Pike. The world-building in Love and Blood is impeccable, the characters compelling, and the prose exciting. I enjoyed the read!
