It is often hard for young people, especially those just starting school, to make friends and feel accepted for who they are and not for the material objects they possess. As young children, we often don’t understand what is truly important when it comes to our lives. In Lupita's Treasure by Lola Cruz, Lupita is feeling troubled in her first-grade classroom after they are given the assignment: “Bring something in that is most important to you.” After seeing what treasures her classmates brought to share with the class, she worries about finding the perfect item to bring and share.
Lupita's Treasure by Lola Cruz is an incredibly well-written story with vibrant artwork, relatable characters, and important concepts for young readers to ponder and enjoy. Lola enables readers to discover that the most important things in life, or what you treasure, aren’t always the same for others, and that’s okay. To be unique, different, and true to yourself are some of the best qualities to possess. In the story, the author enables youngsters to see how the main character Lupita overcomes her fear of being accepted by her classmates by picking the right show-and-tell treasure to present. Readers will also learn about the importance of accepting every person, what makes you special, and the importance of being kind and accepting toward one another. This book would be a wonderful read for any parent, guardian, library, or school teacher to share with the children in their care.
