Blood Vendetta by Stephan M. Sechi is a wild ride through a fever-dream version of America where vengeance is currency and the road to redemption is paved with blood. Part psychedelic Western, part mythic odyssey, three broken souls converge on the Dead Roads: the bounty-hunting Vigilante, haunted and ruthless; Indiego, a drug-addled shaman channeling old spirits and bad luck; and Yma Omari, an assassin with a shattered heart and a blade to match. As they face assassin-nuns, cannibalistic settlers, and supernatural forces pulled from legend, the trio’s pasts and destinies collide in surreal and violent fashion. With cinematic flair and biting satire, Sechi delivers a darkly comic allegory of power, corruption, and the American mythos.
Author Stephan M. Sechi has crafted an absolutely compelling mix of genres to create this unique genre-defying acid western. I loved every part of it and can’t wait to discover more from this vibrant author. Everything came to life in this tale, bursting off the pages with action-packed scenes and vivid settings, even before the larger-than-life characters take centre stage. There’s plenty of violence, satire, and spiritual strangeness, yet nothing feels out of place because of the smooth confidence and skill in the writing itself. This is a hallucinogenic epic and also an intelligent and fearless meditation on justice, identity, and the ghosts of history. The dialogue was characteristic of careless souls and rough riders, and gave the work a quirky, dark, and offbeat humor that undercuts the violence and keeps things from ever feeling too extreme. Overall, Blood Vendetta is highly recommended, and for me, it’s the most original dystopian western I’ve ever read: savage, surreal, and unforgettable.
