Madelyn's First Day of School: More School Words in Spanish and English by Sara Brown is an accessible introduction for young children to Spanish or English. Large, bold type first in Spanish and then in English accompanies each picture. A typical day in the life of a kindergartner or first grader is shared. Items such as tables, easels, and paper are shown, as well as people who will be encountered, such as a teacher and students. Words associated with activities, like lunch and recess, are also included. Students will be very familiar with each scene that is depicted. Additional resources, such as a pronunciation guide and worksheets, can be accessed through a QR code.
Exposure to a second language is a valuable skill for students to acquire. Children can become fluent much more quickly by engaging with the language at an early age. Sara Brown's book, Madelyn's First Day of School, is an excellent introduction to basic school vocabulary. With its clear, distinct text, it is an ideal book for beginning readers to use as they learn both languages. The illustrations by Uliana Barabash are simple and uncluttered, making it clear what the words are referencing. A diverse group of children is represented, engaging in fun activities throughout the school day. As a retired children's librarian, I know that adults will also appreciate this title. There were many days that I had adults searching for easy Spanish books to help them in their language learning. Madelyn's First Day of School is an outstanding resource for kids and adults starting their bilingual journey.
