Ten-year-old Kasandra Cortez is not too happy about moving all the way to America from her home in Brazil in the storybook Magic Charms: The Adventure Begins, Book One by Louise Marie Miller. Her parents think America has better schools and jobs and their mother has been working hard to get the family ready for this big change in culture and language. Kasandra is worried about moving to a new house, starting at a new school, and speaking a new language. Once they reach America, Kasandra and her sister Maria love their new house. Kasandra joins MaryEllen Bay Middle School, and her life takes an interesting turn when, along with her friends Shakira, Darling, and John, they are recruited to join the Animal Guard where they will travel worldwide to save animals on every continent.
This story will take young readers on an adventurous and fantastical journey where they learn about spirit animals, the Animal Guard, the brother and sister Vulture and Crow, constellations, and many other fascinating things that will keep them glued to the book till the very end. There is an element of mystery and secrecy that makes the story intriguing and captivating. The plot is exciting and there is not a moment of boredom as the story unravels. Whether it is the room hidden at the end of the east hallway in Kasandra's house, or the rings, or Ava's knowledge about the spirit animals, there is a lot of excitement in the plot. All the characters are charming and lovable, and I am sure that, like me, young readers will be eagerly waiting to know what is going to happen in Book Two.
