In Carrie Rubin's thriller, Malignant Assumptions, Liza Larkin does not have interpersonal skills, but her father assures her that she can always help someone, even if she cannot ease their pain. Megan Carlson, a coworker of Liza's, is concerned that something has happened to her aunt. Every Thursday, she contacts Megan, but Megan does not hear from her aunt nor does she answer Megan's calls or messages. Megan accepts Liza's offer to take her to Boston, where they discover the aunt's body in her vintage Murphy pull-down bed. The aunt's death is officially declared an unfortunate accident by the medical examiner. There will be no police investigation as it is concluded that she died of asphyxiation. Suspecting foul play, Liza decides to track down the killer on her own and discovers more than she had anticipated.
Malignant Assumptions by Carrie Rubin is a page-turner filled with action. It was fast-paced, and the suspense kept me on the edge of my seat. The twists and turns had me guessing until the end. The main plot was Liza's search for the killer, but some subplots provided variety without disrupting the main thread. It was an easy read, and the chapters flowed into each other. The characters were authentic and relatable. They were ordinary people whom we deal with every day. Because of her extremely unique thinking, Liza was able to focus unusually well on the investigation and developed a strong obsession with finding the killer. This is a fantastic novel, and I recommend it to everyone who enjoys thrillers. I had some food for thought long after I put the book down.
