Marauders by Brandon Collier begins in 1888 in Santa Fe, when Jacob Gunn arrives seeking a new life and is quickly drawn into the violent world of the Marauders, led by Hattie Bluefield. Trouble escalates when Harvey Walsh’s gang executes a brutal bank heist, betraying Chloe in the process. As Jacob and his allies—including Coop, Kiwani, and Dutchie—move through this dangerous Western landscape, internal conflict and worries about loyalty heat up, especially with Walsh’s gang posing a direct threat. Jacob’s group learns about a stolen map that could lead them to greater wealth, prompting them to devise a plan to retrieve it. As rivalries intensify, Jacob and his companions must band together to confront Walsh and his gang while dealing with betrayal, shootouts, and all the blessings and curses of the Wild West.
Brandon Collier’s Marauders introduces readers to Jacob Gunn, a rugged protagonist we can't help but root for. Flawed yet charismatic, Jacob embodies the archetype of a man's man, one who seems to belong in the gritty realities of Collier’s timeline. The novel shines with its phenomenal period details, immersing readers in a world where saloons have paintings of US presidents along the walls, one of which features Grover Cleveland adorned with bullet holes. The landscape is dramatic to an almost cinematic scale, with Collier delivering the goods necessary for a full reader immersion. While I enjoyed every aspect of the story, the pièce de résistance for me personally is, without question, The Snake People, who possess a rich culture and the most intense rituals and could easily warrant their own dedicated novel. Overall, Collier’s storytelling is pitch-perfect, and this novel is a must-read for fans of historical Western fiction.
