Martha May McKenzie and The Magic Cake Big Mistake! by Brian Starr is a gloriously spectacular story of magic and unpredictability. It all starts when Martha plans to tell her grandchildren that she is a witch by presenting them with a particularly delicious but strange cake. Unfortunately, things take a dramatic and crazy turn when her grandson, Lucas, eats the cake. The cake is magical! Martha, Lucas, his sister, Trinity, and Martha’s daughter, Jamie, feel a shaking and a loud noise as magic transports them to another time. There, they encounter many astonishing characters and experience some magical adventures. But will they be able to defeat the evil madman, the Duke? And will they ever return home again? But beware, there is good and dark magic.
Martha May McKenzie and The Magic Cake Big Mistake! by Brian Starr is a brilliant read. Youngsters will love listening to this story. There are many funny and clever moments that I enjoyed thoroughly. I especially liked that Martha needed to recharge her magic before she could use it again. One can quickly see how that alone spells trouble. I loved the character Bubble and her unexpected secret. The background story of Bubble was engrossing. The part about Jamie’s transformation was a bit scary, but the description of it was mesmerizing. Starr’s description of the transformation is why I prefer books over movies. I love the enormous fonts at the core moments in the text. Starr created an exciting story with unique magical spells behind a wickedly good plot told beautifully.
