Max the Gorilla written by KA Mulenga and illustrated by Boutique Books is the story of a brave gorilla that captured a robber. Max was born at the Frankfurt Zoo in Germany. The zookeepers there thought Max would be happier in South Africa. They took him to the Johannesburg Zoo, which gave him a large grassy area surrounded by a moat that would become his new home. Once in Johannesburg, Max met his wife Lisa. They lived happily at the zoo, where humans visited them, but never crossed the moat or bothered them. One day a robber jumped into their part of the zoo and swam across the moat, just as Max and Lisa were finishing their dinner and preparing for bed. Max became angry. He knocked the man to the ground and held him there until four policemen came to arrest him. Max was a hero. The zookeepers were so happy with him that they had a statue made in his honor.
I didn’t know that a gorilla had ever helped to catch a robber, and I enjoyed learning about such a brave feat. This tale of Max the Gorilla joins other animal stories by KA Mulenga, such as Donk and the Stubborn Donkeys, Chuck the Cheetah, and Will and his Best Friend Whale. KA Mulenga writes books with a positive message that entertain children and make them laugh. I would also say that this book has a message for robbers. If you are going to go into a gorilla’s home, don’t bother him when he’s going to bed. You don’t want to make him mad. You can still see the statue of Max today if you go to South Africa and visit the Johannesburg Zoo.
