What happens when your past refuses to stay in the past—even after you’ve put away the wild days for a quieter life? In Midlife Melody by Melina Druga, readers are introduced to Holly, a single mom disillusioned with her life of routine, and Spencer, a former rock star never wanting to be in the spotlight again and longing for a lasting connection. He comes across as passionate and sure of himself, while she shows resilience and a will of her own. Together, the sparks fly. They build a relationship while balancing family, fresh starts, and the long shadow of fame. At its heart, it is a story about the hope of finding love and acceptance when the past is never entirely private. In the end, will Holly take a chance with Spencer and find something great, or will she turn him down and always wonder?
Midlife Melody by Melina Druga instantly caught my eye thanks to its title and the striking cover art. The title made me curious. I wondered what kind of music plays out in the second act of someone’s life? I thought the bold cover promised a story with edge and heart. Once I started reading, I was hooked. I quickly became caught up in the lives of Holly and Spencer, who, like me, are both middle-aged, somewhat set in their ways, and carry their fair share of baggage. The realities of dating later in life and dealing with old mistakes felt believable and relatable. The book didn’t gloss over these struggles and still came across as hopeful while painting the picture of a real connection. The alternating points of view brought both main characters vividly to life. I recommend this book to anyone wanting a romance with mature themes, believable messiness, and a touch of rock-and-roll.
