Millie and Mina by Kimberly Dana is a children’s picture book about two best friends who come from different cultural and religious backgrounds. Despite their differences, Millie and Mina enjoy many of the same activities, such as charades and backgammon during family night, or playing the piano and the oud. As young readers turn the pages, they see the contrast between the girls’ homes, families, and traditions. Mina and her family speak Arabic and celebrate Eid, while Millie’s family speaks English and celebrate Christmas. These cultural distinctions take readers inside the lives of two girls and show how they can celebrate their unique identities while building strong, respectful friendships.
The tone of Millie and Mina is upbeat, inclusive, and child-friendly. Kimberly Dana’s writing is simple yet powerful. It helps young readers to understand and appreciate differences without judgment. The pacing is smooth, with each page showcasing the beauty of how family life looks across cultures. For example, Millie and her family attend religious services at a church while Mina and her family attend religious services at a mosque. It also shows familial bonds that are universal, especially when both families sit down and enjoy their favorite foods and games. Farida Zaman’s illustrations bring it all to life in a very colorful way. Millie and Mina will resonate with fans of Same, Same but Different by Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw and Just Like Me by Vanessa Brantley-Newton. This delightful read is a great addition to classrooms, libraries, and family bookshelves. It aims to promote diversity, empathy, and genuine friendship. It’s a sweet reminder that love and laughter are universal.
