Mindfield is a young adult paranormal thriller by C.W. James. High school senior Matt Storm has been hiding a secret his entire life. He has the telepathic ability to read other people's minds. However, after a chance encounter with Trent Spencer, Matt realizes he isn't alone, as Trent also exhibits similar capabilities. After receiving an emergency telepathic message from Trent asking for his help, Matt and his best friend, Hunter, embark on a journey to search for Trent, eventually stumbling upon his abandoned truck. Now, dangerous men are following the two friends as they investigate what could have happened to Trent. Matt finally finds Trent in captivity, tortured by Victor Sokolov and his men. But with seemingly no help in sight, will he be able to free himself and Trent? Can Matt learn to amplify his abilities in time?
A fast-paced young adult thriller with a tinge of the paranormal, Mindfield will entertain fans who love books like Steven Gould's Jumper series. C.W. James relies on minimalistic worldbuilding and weaves an absorbing plot that moves at a breakneck speed, leaving little room for you to take a break. All the characters slot into their roles perfectly with distinct personalities and traits that make an impression on you. I especially loved the Hardy Boys references and thoroughly enjoyed the friendship and dynamic between Matt and Hunter. Sokolov is a villain who you'll love to hate. All in all, this is a story that anyone who enjoys young adult thrillers will love.
