In Mississippi Wizards by Kenneth Penn, Cassandra is haunted by unresolved trauma. Cassandra witnessed the tragic death of her cousin, Antonne. Since then, Cassandra has been plagued by visions. Cassandra hides this from her husband, Ben, to shield him from her suffering. The most unsettling one is of Nancy, the ghostly form of a decomposed woman who repeatedly pleads for help. Teenager Liza struggles with her own visions after her mother forbids her friendship with Mary. Liza feels isolated and misunderstood by her conservative family, and she also encounters Nancy’s ghostly figure. Liza's visions become a powerful reflection of her anxiety surrounding her identity and fear of coming out. A weekend in the De Soto National Forest draws Cassandra into a chilling confrontation where the boundaries between reality, memory, and the supernatural become increasingly impossible to distinguish.

Mississippi Wizards by Kenneth Penn is complex, with several plots woven together. With all the twists and turns, I never knew what to expect next. While reading this book, I could not put it down; I was too afraid I would miss something. The characters are realistic and have grown throughout the book. The writing was engaging and had me hooked from the first page until the last. The chapters were dedicated to Cassandra, Liza, and Nancy and flowed into each other. This way, I had a chance to see where the characters came from and why they were behaving the way they were. The descriptions were vivid, and it was easy for me to lose myself in Cassandra and Liza’s world with Nancy. The book was expertly written and kept me invested until the final page.
