Mistymoto and the Howling Wind by Todd Reese explores experiencing storms, being resilient, having courage, and working together. Mistymoto is an adorable cocker spaniel who has never experienced a hurricane before and is a little nervous about the approaching Hurricane Dexter set to hit Jacksonville. She knows that to be responsible, she and her dad need to prepare for the storm by watching updates, getting supplies, and creating a safe space in their home. They transfer their hall closet into a haven that shelters them as the hurricane hits, which gives Mistymoto an important lesson in being prepared.
Todd Reese incorporates different elements as points that parents can use to discuss with their children about being ready for bad weather. This covers getting supplies, following reports, making sure there’s plenty of water, and staying calm. This can also help with children experiencing anxiety about dealing with storms by giving them a layout that they can follow to feel more in control. The events follow sheltering in place and converting a space in the house into a safe spot. The story primarily focuses on being prepared for a hurricane; however, it also briefly addresses being ready for any occasion by being resourceful and having an emergency kit. The details of the storm aren’t scary, though it does give genuine descriptions, including Mistymoto being confused. This keeps the information from being overwhelming and makes it easy for a child to digest. Mistymoto and the Howling Wind is an ideal resource for teaching, calming, and preparing children for bad weather.
