Journey of Smooth J: Basketball to Poet by Joseph Hill is a collection of poems that looks into the lives and struggles of Black men in America. Hill writes about more than just hardship. You get poems about love, passion, and relationships that run on respect, real desire, and genuine appreciation. Basketball plays a big part in his story too. It’s obvious just how much the sport matters to him, and he talks about the doors it opened along the way. Hill talks about Chicago, a city of resilience, full of history and inspiration. The poems question the American dream that seems unattainable, a father's responsibility to protect, provide, and serve in a country where jobs are hard to find, and the system is working against them. Hill covers racial injustice, calls prisoners the new slaves who work for no pay, but also empowers men, encouraging them to embrace their legacy as kings. The book explores the fragility of modern relationships built on infatuation and lust. Finally, the book celebrates creativity, highlighting the power found in words and providing messages of hope and rebirth.
Journey of Smooth J: Basketball to Poet is a collection that feels like a conversation: it’s personal, but anyone can see themselves in these moments. It touches your heart and makes you reflect on your own experiences. Joseph Hill does an excellent job of telling his story through his work. The poems are honest, going after what is wrong in our society, and then deeply personal, sharing relationship insecurities and intimate moments. The book will keep you guessing about what is coming next as the author jumps from appreciating his father to a rollercoaster relationship that ended in pain and disappointment. It also offers positive messages that can help you find opportunities for growth amid life's struggles. Hill shows why professional help, a little faith, and being kind to yourself really matter when it comes to healing and moving forward. The book stands out right from its striking cover to the honest lessons tucked inside. If you’re drawn to poetry about systemic challenges, family expectations, tangled love, or the search for your own voice, this one’s worth picking up.
