Alliteration at its best, Molly dreams of being “perfectly pretty in pink” for picture day. The only thing is, she loses one of her front teeth just before picture day. She can’t smile now, can she? Or can she risk being “imperfectly pretty in pink?” In Pria Dee and Tina Perko’s Molly and the Picture Day, Molly must learn an important lesson on appearances and the simple fact that no one is ever perfect. Even her classmates have something not quite right, not quite perfect, as they pose for their pictures and even smile. Can Molly find her smile again? Can she pose for another picture with a toothless smile? Why not! It’s really as simple as saying, “Cheese!”
Pria Dee and Tina Perko’s picture book, Molly and the Picture Day: Molly Says Cheese!, is a charming story about appearances and what really matters most. The plot follows Molly as she excitedly prepares for picture day at school, and then the world comes crashing down around her when she loses a tooth. How she deals with the situation takes courage and a little bit of ingenuity as she watches her classmates overcome their imperfections, realizing that being “perfectly pretty in pink” isn’t the most important thing about her appearance. The language is simple to help young readers improve their reading skills. The illustrations are bright and colorful and add another dimension to the story. I love the way the artist has demonstrated Molly’s feelings through her various expressions. Well done! This is a great story to teach young readers about appearances and what it means to be imperfectly perfect, like the rest of us.
